Guided Tours

Would you like to discover the Nikolaiviertel on a guided tour? We have compiled a list of city tour providers that we can recommend:

Anna Haase

Experience the diversity of the Nikolaiviertel, its history, significance, and charm on a unique guided tour. Discover secret corners and the beauty of the neighborhood: with the charm of a small town in the heart of the hustle and bustle of the big city.

The Nikolaiviertel, located between the Red Town Hall and the Spree River, is something very special. That is why it was recognized by the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments in 2018 and designated a protected area.

It is not only a residential area, but also a great place to work, enjoy life, and live happily. It was cleared of war ruins in 1970 and rebuilt in 1987 for Berlin’s 750th anniversary, combining historical and modern elements. With St. Nicholas’ Church as its landmark, it is also considered the cradle of Berlin.

ANSICHTSSACHEN

Museum Island, Schlossplatz, Nikolaiviertel – World Heritage Site, Humboldt Forum, heart of the capital

On this tour, we will focus exclusively on the area of the former twin city of Cölln-Berlin. Museum Island in Cölln was the last of the three sections of our tour to be developed. The renovation of the five buildings on Museum Island, now under UNESCO protection, is partly complete and partly in progress.

To the south of this – also in Cölln – the Berlin Palace has apparently been resurrected. Behind the façade – one side of which is designed as a reminiscence of the Palace of the Republic – the Humboldt Forum could become the new cultural center of the city.
Now we finally reach Berlin soil with the Nikolaiviertel. Pictures from 1985 bear witness to the reconstruction. The Nikolaiviertel is considered the “cradle of Berlin” and is very popular with tourists.

BERLIN KULTOUR

With its mix of reconstruction and prefabricated buildings, the Nikolaiviertel district strikes some visitors as strange. However, it is precisely this mix that makes it a particularly exciting part of Berlin’s architectural history. On the guided tour “The Nikolaiviertel as a monument – East Berlin architecture & its legacy,” we discover traces of the reconstruction and take a look at Berlin’s origins. If you like, you can continue the tour into Prussian Berlin along Museum Island and Gendarmenmarkt, experiencing the different layers of the city’s history up close.

With Tobi Allers, you’ll hear stories that others tend to ignore – whether historical, street art, or from the art and culture scene. As an art historian and Berlin book author, Tobi conveys an authentic closeness to the city and surprises even die-hard Berliners with little anecdotes in the most inconspicuous corners.

We will take a long walk to visit Berlin’s most beautiful spots, Gendarmenmarkt and Bebelplatz with their historic 18th-century buildings: the French and German Cathedrals, St. Hedwig’s Cathedral, the State Opera House, and along the boulevard Unter den Linden. We will also explore Museum Island, home to the world-famous museums of classical antiquity and Berlin Cathedral.

We will end our walk in the Nikolaiviertel, where Berlin was founded in the Middle Ages, on the banks of the River Spree. On request, if we allow more time, we can also visit the Hackesche Höfe on the way to the Nikolaiviertel, one of the most interesting commercial courtyard complexes, which was renovated in the 1990s.

Who bought indulgences in St. Nicholas’ Church for a robbery and then stole the cash box from the indulgence preacher Tetzel? Where is the “Galgenhaus” (gallows house)? Where is Cölln and what traces of the Middle Ages can still be seen today?
