World Cleanup Day 2024 at Nikolaiviertel

21. September 2024

World Cleanup Day is the world’s largest bottom-up citizens’ movement to clean up the environment. It first took place in 2018, back then in 157 countries and with 17.6 million participants. The number of participating countries has since grown to over 190. In Germany, the campaign day is organized every year in September by the non-profit association “Let’s do it! Germany e.V.”.

Now, on September 20, it was time again and an estimated 400,000 people in Germany joined together in over 9,000 clean-up campaigns to clear streets, parks, beaches, forests, rivers and riverbanks of carelessly discarded waste.

We were delighted to be part of this year’s garbage collection campaign in the Nikolai district and to make a positive contribution. Organized by Jahn, Mack & Partner, people were invited to clean up together and free gloves, tongs and garbage bags were handed out at a specially set up information stand. Many helping hands then set out to clear our alleyways, lawns and flower beds of garbage – in line with the motto of World Cleanup Day: “Together for a clean, healthy and plastic waste-free future!”

By 5 p.m., the garbage bags had been filled with all kinds of packaging, cans, bottles, foil, crown caps, plastic bags, etc., which unfortunately did not find their “normal way” into the garbage bins, but were simply thrown away. We’d like to thank everyone who took part and look forward to World Cleanup Day 2025. It’s a great campaign, also to make more people aware of how important a clean environment is for us all. And of course, everything looks so much nicer tidied up…

Here’s another tip for anyone who might want to organize their own cleanup days in the future: the website www.worldcleanupday.de of the non-profit association “Let’s Do It! Germany e.V.”, enables local authorities, schools, companies, associations, initiatives and private individuals to register their cleanups and receive information on how to carry out cleanup campaigns safely. And, of course, the website also provides information on all the campaigns carried out throughout Germany.
