Easter in the Nikolai Quarter: our top picks
Spring is finally here and we get to spend more time outside again. The upcoming Easter weekend is a great opportunity for a stroll through Berlin’s oldest district, the Nikolaiviertel. We have put together the best tips for enjoying, shopping and relaxing in the heart of Berlin.
There are plenty of nice spots to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine – for example in the beer garden of the Gerichtslaube in Poststraße, under the arcades by the Vinothek or in the large outdoor area of Brauhaus Georgbraeu with its home-brewed beers and a direct view of the St. George monument. Or you can find a nice table to relax right on the banks of the Spree, for example at Ephraim’s, the new Moon Exquisite, the Zille-Stube or outside Heidi’s Café. In many restaurants you will find an Easter menu with seasonal delights, from braised lamb shank to octopus carpaccio, and of course there are also many vegetarian and vegan options. Prefer an ice cream in your hand or a coffee to go? The benches in front of the Nikolaikirche and around the Gründungsbrunnen fountain are particularly nice places for a short break and a popular meeting point.
If you’re looking for something sweet for your Easter plate at home or as a treat for your loved ones – and perhaps something different from the well-known, gold-foiled chocolate bunny with the little bell – you’ll find special macarons and Easter cake pops at tigertörtchen and a huge selection of chocolate bunnies at Viba am Kirchplatz.
And of course, Easter is not Easter without a little bit of decoration. In addition to cosmetics and fashion, the Make-Up Lounge now also offers handmade products, such as small, crocheted Easter candle baskets from Gughilella, which can also serve as practical egg warmers. Or why not browse through the Erzgebirgischer Weihnachtsmarkt in Propststraße? There you will find countless bunnies and Easter figures made of wood and painted by hand – for your own enjoyment or as a great gift. And you might want to bring spring into your own home with flowery cushions and table linen, which we spotted at fröhlich wohnen, also on Propststraße.
Speaking of flowery: spring also brings its own fragrance to the city. A great opportunity to create your very own fragrance, which you can do at Areej located on Am Nussbaum. You can compose a unique, very personal fragrance from hundreds of components and essences – with individual expert advice and bottled in gorgeous flacons.
We are of course hoping for beautiful spring weather, but just in case it does rain: our museums are also open on public holidays. In the Zille Museum, for example, you can learn all about the life and work of the famous Berlin artist. Or discover Berlin’s history in the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT at the Museum Ephraim-Palais.
