Berlin Beer Garden Season: The Best Outdoor Spots in the Nikolaiviertel
What would spring and summer in Berlin be without the occasional relaxing afternoon in a beer garden? In the weeks following Easter, the city and nature come back to life, and everyone is happy to be able to spend more time outdoors again. Beer garden enthusiasts will, of course, find plenty of options throughout the city, but the Nikolaiviertel neighborhood has a very special charm during this time of year. And with its unique concentration of dining options, it offers a particularly large number of restaurants with outdoor seating areas that fill up with guests as soon as the first warm rays of sunshine appear.
With its characteristic cobblestone streets, romantic alleys, and historic buildings, this area is reminiscent of Berlin’s past—an atmosphere further enhanced by the numerous beer gardens. The neighborhood is the oldest part of the city and, with its unique shops, restaurants, and cafés, offers a particularly charming blend of history, shopping, and enjoyment.
Our Beer Garden Tipps
First up is the beer garden at the Zur Gerichtslaube restaurant, located on Poststraße. Here, you can sit outdoors in a cozy setting and enjoy classic Berlin and Brandenburg cuisine—naturally, accompanied by a cold beer. Especially in the spring, this is a great place to relax after a stroll through the old town.
Located right on the waterfront, the Georgbraeu brewery welcomes visitors to settle in for a while. The spacious beer garden offers views of the Spree River, the St. Georg Monument, and the Marstall. And as the name suggests, they serve house-brewed beer here. This combination of fresh air, historic city views, and craft-brewed specialties makes the Georgbraeu a great gathering spot in the neighborhood.
The courtyard garden at Fischer & Lustig is a bit quieter, but no less atmospheric. Surrounded by old linden trees, it’s an almost idyllic little oasis. Especially in the evening, when lights illuminate the courtyard, the beer garden becomes an awesome spot for anyone who wants to relax and enjoy the moment.
Tradition is top priority at the Zum Nussbaum restaurant. As a tavern modeled after historical designs, it also reflects the old Berlin pub scene as it was known to Heinrich Zille, a regular patron back in the day. In the small but very cozy outdoor seating area, you can enjoy rustic dishes and easily imagine how guests were entertained here as far back as the Imperial era.
Last but not least, the Zum Paddenwirt restaurant on Eiergasse also features a lovely beer garden, shaded by mature trees and offering a charming view of Nikolaikirchplatz. This small green oasis provides pleasant shade and creates a relaxed atmosphere where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a while.
